I Was Glad

Glorious music for choir, organ and violin, under the baton of conductor Alistair Digges, with organist Andrew Forbes and violinist Kirsty Main. 

The programme features some splendid choral and organ staples performed over the last century at royal ceremonial events. Hubert Parry's I Was Glad was performed at the Queen's coronation in 1953 and at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 2011. Samuel Sebastian Wesley's moving and meditative piece, Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace, was also performed at the 1953 coronation and, more recently, at St Giles' Cathedral for the procession of the Queen's coffin in 2022.

Louis Vierne originally wrote his symphonic soundscape, Messe Solenelle, for choir and two organs, but later adapted it for single organ to better suit most churches. The piece is a cornerstone of French Romantic music and always popular with audiences.

The concert also features two works by prolific living composers: David Briggs' Jubilate Deo and Jonathan Dove's celebrated piece, Seek Him That Maketh the Seven Stars, an uplifting work that perfectly evokes sparkling stars through use of the organ's high register. 

The choir will also perform Stainer's I Saw the Lord, one of the greatest anthems of the Victorian era, and Colin Mawby's short motet, Ave Verum Corpus.
