The Choir

Vacancy for Musical Director

A great opportunity to work with a medium sized, mixed-aged and passionate Edinburgh choir. The Edinburgh Singers are seeking a musical director to take up the post in September 2008, following the depature of Dominic Peckham to pursue his singing career in London. We are looking to appoint an exceptional choral conductor with the ability to lead, challenge and inspire the choir, a group with a growing and exciting reputation as one of the most important in the capital, if not Scotland. We want our next Musical Director to continue to develop this reputation.

The Edinburgh Singers was formed as an amateur choir in 1952. Whether singing in support of local and national charities, or performing in major venues such as the Usher Hall, the choir has been part of the city's music scene ever since. In the past year, the choir has performed in a 3 day tour in Tuscany, worked with Scottish Opera and BBC SSO, has been featured twice in BBC's Songs of Praise and on Radios 3 & 4 and has won through to the National Selection stage of BBC Radio 3's Choir of the Year competition. The choir has also performed two popular concerts, and is working towards a performance of Bach's Mass in b minor for the 22nd of June.

Throughout school terms the choir rehearses on Thursdays from 7.30 - 9.30 pm, with an additional rehearsals as required depending on commitments. All rehearsals are taken by the Musical Director together with the choir's own accompanist. The choir performs a core of three concerts a year, as well as other media opportunities, and is planning a tour of Spain in October 2009.

You will be responsible for working with the choir and committee to plan the concert calendar for the year ahead, establish new opportunities and challenges as well as advising on the selection of guest soloists and musicians.
